Herpes is a disease that causes lots of confusion, because not only are there different types of herpes, but there are different names for the same herpes infections.
Are cold sores herpes?
The short answer is “yes”, cold sores are merely a less offensive name for a herpes outbreak on your lips. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Fever blisters are another name for a herpes outbreak.
Are cold sores the same as canker sores?
Canker sores, are completely different from cold sores, even though they look similar. Canker sores aren’t caused by the herpes virus, but are a result of your immune system reacting to certain foods you ate — usually citrus, chocolate and wheat. They will not respond to herpes medications and typically appear in different spots than herpes outbreaks would appear. If you have a very painful sore inside your mouth and it has a white head, looking somewhat like a pimple inside your mouth, that’s most likely a canker sore.
